Overview

The survey earns the attention. The campaign earns the distribution.

I worked on the Barometer as Middleweight Designer at Gloo Communications. I designed the report's front cover and the campaign layer that carried it into market: the social system, motion, award entries and the translated editions. The interior report design was led by a senior team.

The cover wasn't a quick job. Vodafone had just introduced a strict new format for the report range, a split layout of solid Vodafone red against a single image, and the guidelines around it were exacting. Most of the work was getting the image to sit right under that red, with the retouching and Photoshop craft it took to hold the brand to the letter.

Context

A globally-distributed flagship

The 2019 Barometer surveyed 1,758 businesses worldwide on their IoT deployments. A publication at that scale needs a campaign rollout to match: localised social content, motion, translations, and supporting collateral in every relevant market.
The Cover

A new format, held to the letter

I designed the report's front cover to Vodafone's newly introduced format: solid red against a single image. Strict guidelines, heavy retouching, and the kind of Photoshop work that doesn't show unless you know what it took.
My Role

Cover, collateral and localisation

Beyond the cover, I built the social system, produced motion assets for digital distribution, worked on award entries, and supported the translated editions of the collateral.

What I Worked On

The survey is a document. The social system is a dozen one-glance artefacts.

Taking the Barometer findings into feed formats that travelled: LinkedIn, Twitter, trade publications. The core craft here is compression. Turning a multi-country report into single stats a reader absorbs in one scroll.

Built for the silent, autoplay feed.

Short motion pieces to support launch across markets. Animated statistic highlights, summary reels, quotable findings. Designed to read with the sound off and stop the scroll in the first second.

English layouts don't translate. They get rebuilt.

Layout work for the non-English editions. Editorial typography has to be reconstructed per language: line lengths, hierarchy and spacing all shift. This was where I first understood what a genuinely multi-market brand system costs.

The brief doesn't end at distribution.

Submission design for the industry awards the campaign entered. Packaging the work so it reads to a judging panel as clearly as it did to the original audience.

The Work

The campaign layer, in the wild.

A selection of the collateral I worked on: the brochure, the award submissions, the social system and motion, and the launch film.

The Barometer was Vodafone Business’s annual IoT survey at the time.

My contribution was on the campaign layer, and what I carry forward is the craft lesson underneath it. Working on this project as a middleweight designer was part of how I learned what senior editorial design actually looks like in practice.
